Flooring Installation Options

The floor is one of the most important parts of a house. It’s the surface that people walk on and the one that they see the most..

Flooring Installation Methods

One of the most common types of installations are floating floor installations. This works by connecting the peices of the floor to each other directly or with glue instead of being attached to a subfloor. One thing that should be noted is that floating floors are not a type of floor, and this method is what you should use for laminate flooring.

Nailed floor installations are also common, and cheaper than glued installations when using a subfloor unless carpet is involved. This method is not intended to be used for laminate floors.

Peel-and-stick installations can be done fairly quickly and easily. Putting vinyl directly over concrete or the subfloor is a great option.

Last, but not least are glue installations. This method is the most expensive and time consuming. It's also requires a higher degree of skill, and it shouldn't be considered for a DIY project

Types of Floors

There are several types of floors you can have in your home. Each one has different strengths depending on your expectations. Keep reading to see what might be the best option for your needs.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate floors are very popular because they are easy to install and are fairly durable. They are also relatively inexpensive. But, they do have a few disadvantages.

The main disadvantage of laminate flooring is that it is not as durable as true hardwood. It doesn't resist moisture as well as a true hardwood floor, and it can't be resanded back to the original color so there is much greater chance it will have to be replaced.

Carpet

The next most common type of flooring that is installed in homes is carpet. Carpets are typically installed using 3 main methods, glue down, stretch in, and cut to fit. The glue down method, of which there are two are the most expensive methods. However, they also make the carpet really difficult to move.

The stretch in method is a cheaper way to install carpet, however it's not good for high traffic areas.

The cut to fit method is best when you will be wanting to remove the carpet for any reason. It's not suggested if you want the carpet to be a permanent fixture.

The main advantage of this type of floor is that it is easy to install. The installer simply lays the floorboards on the subfloor and then drives nails into the floorboard to secure them.

The main disadvantage of this type of floor is that it has a tendency to move. Because the floorboards aren’t attached to the subfloor, they can shift around. This can cause the floor to crack or even buckle.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring can be afforable for lower end options. For higher quality vinyl it can come be nearly as much as hardwood. One reason it's popular is that it's designs can be highly customized, and since you can use floating floor installation you may be able to install it yourself. However it can be difficult to repair despite it being easy to maintain. Depending on the circumstances you can expect to replace anywhere from 10 to 20 plus years.

Ceramic Tile Flooring

Ceramic tile, much like vinyl offers a variety of design options. It's also more affordable than a true hardwood floor, and it's fairly easy to clean. The fact that it's slip resistant is also a plus.

On the downside it's not easy to repair, and it an have a plastic like appearance.

As for how long it last, you can normally expect a lifespan of at least 20 years. Some ceramic tile floors last twice as long.
